Law

Types of legal articles

There are two main types of legal periodicals:

  • A law review is a scholarly journal focusing on legal issues. In the US, law reviews are normally published by an organization of students at a law school or through a bar association. Outside North America, law reviews are usually edited by senior academics/faculty. This type of article is useful because they provide an in-depth analysis of legal topics and extensive references to other sources, including primary sources (court cases, statutes, regulations).  Law review articles may be most useful for research assignments.
  • Practice-orientated publications are written by practicing attorneys or active bar members for their professional peers. These can include commercially published journals in specialized fields, news services, and legal newspapers.
