Margaret Henderson and Ashley Wilson have recent received a Collection Equity and Outreach Award from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Region 5. Books in this collection reflect health and wellness topics, specifically in underrepresented populations. It includes fiction, nonfiction, memoirs, and poetry representing diverse people, illnesses, and other health related concerns. Cultural competence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with persons from cultures and/ or belief systems other than one's own, based on various factors. Culturally competent health workers and organizations have a positive effect on patient care by delivering services that are respectful of and responsive to the health beliefs, practices and cultural and linguistic needs of diverse patients.
