Prompting the Robot: Testing Heuristic Acronyms for Successful AI Faceted Searching

Poster Abstract

Prompting the Robot Abstract

Prompting the Robot: Testing Heuristic Acronyms for Successful AI Faceted Searching
With the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots, librarians will need to teach users to apply advanced search techniques using conversational AI search interfaces. This poster will explore the use of several proposed synchronous and asynchronous instructional tools designed to teach users to develop effective conversational AI search prompts. Successful information searching in an AI interface requires effective prompts. We propose that this can be learned through heuristic acronyms, similar to the PICO (population, intervention, comparison, and outcomes) model used to guide searches of medical literature, while also providing opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of faceted search techniques.  This poster will outline our process and propose a final acronym for successful faceted search using conversational AI.  We will also share the results of an experiment using an undergraduate honors class to test a range of AI-generated heuristic acronyms and consider their success and efficacy in finding information sources. Our heuristic acronym can be easily and widely adopted by Instruction and Education Librarians in a range of classroom situations and beyond.  This poster will use a robot design and QR codes to encourage audience participation.
