Navigation Tips

Tips for Navigating DataPlanet:

  1. The researcher should use the categories on the left side to select a Subject.
  2. Browse the option in the subject category.
  3. Once a category is selected, adjust the options at the top such as year, state, etc. to narrow down what appears in the graphs.
  4. View the different chart options.
  5. Adjust chart types to select a chart best explains the data you want to portray.
  6. See the sources for this data below the chart, oftentimes the source link will lead you to updated information. Search the title of the dataset if it is difficult to find.
  7. The researcher can export the table to include in a presentation or share with others. 
  8. Cite your work by click the Cite tab.

A chart such as the one above can be used to compare operational costs. 

 

This database is unique because it mostly pulls statistics from government agencies. Some of these agencies require regular reports from companies and organizations. A commonly used source in DataPlanet is the Census.gov. The Census conducts regular surveys on various topics regularly. DataPlanet gathers this data from these different sources to create subject categories and compiling them into charts for easy comparison.
