Comics by Topic

Collage of comics cover art. Drums, 9-11, Ms. Marvel, Kill Shakespeare, and Promethea.

This guide organizes selected comics by themes and topics that may be of most use in the higher education curriculum. It is intended to give student researchers and faculty a starting point to explore how topics covered in the classroom are represented in sequential art.

Included in this guide are graphic novels and comics. Comic strips and political cartoons are not covered. The guide is by no means exhaustive. There will likely be more comics that cover the topic than the titles chosen as representative examples, but we hope this will give you a good place to start.

The SDSU Library has a large and growing collection of comics and you are encouraged to use them! You will find some of our graphic novels and secondary research resources in the library’s circulating collection. However, most of the titles are for in-library use only and may be paged by Special Collections and University Archives.

More topics will be added soon. Thanks! -Pamela Jackson
