About

Mental Health Month

Mental Health Awareness Month was first observed in 1949 as Mental Health Awareness Week (Mental Health America, n.d.). Originally created by Mental Health America founder Clifford W. Beers and the Jaycees, the week was designed to increase Americans' knowledge and understanding of mental illness and mental health in the post-World War II era. Over the past several decades, more government and non-profit organizations, including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have begun to recognize this month and disseminate information and resources to Americans about mental health (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2023).
