This year's display for Disability Pride Month is disability and the arts. For this, I wanted to incorporate more expansive definitions of both disability (such as, D/deafness, neurodivergence, and chronic illnesses) and art (music. performing arts, and writing in addition to visual arts).
Art history often focuses on art created by non-disabled people. When disabled artists are mentioned, their disabilities are often erased and only focuses on a select few artists (like Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh, and Ludwig van Beethoven). This display highlights several of these artists, as well as many contemporary artists and art historians studying disability.
This display was curated by Cat Ellis, Health Sciences Librarian.
