Historiographical Essay

As stated in the syllabus for this class, "a good historiographical essay should introduce and evaluate the key writings and issues on a particular topic and show how scholarly views of that topic have changed over the past several decades." Remember that historiography essays typically use secondary sources as a basis for analysis. This is very different from a direct investigation of historical events or people, which uses primary documents.

Steps:

  • Pick a topic
  • Read current scholarship, aka academic articles and book intros.
  • Discover any historiographical debates
  • Review bibliographies to identify important earlier works
  • Read earlier works
  • Draw your own conclusions
